A significant milestone has been achieved within the ongoing organ regeneration and transplantation research at the Alexander Natishvili Institute of Morphology.
In 2024–2025, the research team developed a platform, methodology, and corresponding protocols for prolonged ex situ machine perfusion. The experiments successfully achieved 24-hour ex situ machine perfusion of the liver, while maintaining the organ in good condition and suitable for transplantation.
Interim findings from the research were presented at international scientific forums in Seoul and Tbilisi. In 2026, the study is continuing using livers from large animal models to quantitatively assess the potential for regeneration during prolonged machine perfusion.
