Significance of New Biomarkers Evaluated in Molecular Oncology Research

The Alexander Natishvili Institute of Morphology is conducting research in the field of molecular pathology of cancer, with a particular focus on identifying tumor-associated circulating DNA, RNA, and microRNAs in tissue and plasma and evaluating their potential as biomarkers.

Studies conducted in 2024–2025 investigated the biomarker potential of Gankyrin (PSMD10) and miRNA-122, miRNA-130, miRNA-15, miRNA-152, miRNA-200A, miRNA-200B, miRNA-21, miRNA-26, and miRNA-9, as well as their role in hepatocellular carcinogenesis.

Scientific studies in this research area involved Mikheil Jangavadze, Levan Gogichaishvili, Giorgi Lobzhanidze, Zanda Bedinashvili, Nana Goishvili, Ketevan Tsomaia, Ia Khakhutaishvili, Irakli Kirvalidze, and other researchers and collaborators.

The findings were presented at the 36th European Congress of Pathology in Florence and the Association for Molecular Pathology Europe 2024 Congress in Madrid and were also reported in related scientific publications.

The research aims to investigate molecular alterations associated with hepatocellular carcinoma and to evaluate biomarkers that may have potential applications in the diagnosis of the disease and the detection of its recurrence.
